Description :
Evernia prunastri is a lichen that grows mainly on oak trees in Europe and North Africa. It is collected as a key ingredient in perfumes. It has a complex aroma with earthy, woody, mossy, leathery, and slightly musky notes, along with a hint of damp forest floor. Oakmoss absolute or extract is usually dark green to brown and is valued for its ability to hold volatile top notes in place and make fragrances last longer. It has been an essential part of chypre and fougère fragrances for a long time, adding depth, longevity, and a natural balance.
Oakmoss forms the heart of many classical and contemporary chypre and fougère perfumes, blending naturally with bergamot, patchouli, labdanum, lavender, and musk. It imparts a rich, long-lasting woody-mossy foundation and softens synthetic notes for a more natural aspect. Despite regulatory restrictions limiting its use due to allergenic compounds, perfumers use oakmoss selectively or use alternatives like Evernyl to retain its rich, signature aroma.
Oakmoss essential oil is also employed in aromatherapy for grounding and calming effects, while included in soaps, creams, and lotions for its earthy fragrance and mild skin-soothing properties.
Used in candles, incense, and air fresheners, oakmoss enhances ambiance with its natural, forest-like, resilient aroma, providing a sophisticated and cozy sensory environment.
