Histamine interacts with H1 receptors on a variety of cells throughout the body to cause a variety of allergic symptoms, including sneezing, itching, runny nose, and hives. As the name implies, H1 receptor antagonists block or inhibit the activation of these receptors, reducing histamine's effects and allergy-related symptoms. H1 receptor antagonists come in two generations, each with a distinct set of traits. Due to its ability to permeate the blood-brain barrier and affect the central nervous system, first-generation antihistamines like diphenhydramine and chlorpheniramine frequently result in sleepiness.
