Because of their better side effect profiles as compared to previous antidepressants like TCAs and MAOIs, SSRIs and SNRIs are frequently chosen.Hypnotics and anxiolytics are used to treat sleep disruptions and anxiety disorders, respectively. While benzodiazepines, including lorazepam and diazepam, are useful for treating anxiety temporarily, prolonged use of them increases the risk of tolerance and dependency. Anticonvulsants such as valproate and lamotrigine, as well as mood stabilizers like lithium, are mainly used in bipolar disorder to regulate manic and depressed episodes.
