DDT and other organochloride insecticides destroy insects' neurological systems, causing paralysis and death. However, the persistence of these compounds in the environment has caused serious environmental and health concerns. Organochlorides are extremely stable and can accumulate in soil, water, and live organisms, causing bioaccumulation and biomagnification throughout the food chain. Regardless of their usefulness, organochlorides' harmful environmental impact has resulted in widespread prohibitions and restrictions on their usage. The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, adopted in 2001, identified DDT as one of the "dirty dozen" substances slated for global removal.Many countries have phased out the usage of organochloride insecticides in favor of safer pest management alternatives.
