They are used in many different industries, including as the manufacturing of pigments, dyes, medicines, and organic synthesis intermediates.α-naphthol, or 1-naphthol, is one of the most basic hydroxynaphthalenes. Its alpha location on the naphthalene ring is joined to a single hydroxyl group. At room temperature, this chemical is a white solid that dissolves in ether and other organic solvents. 1. Dye and pesticide production both employ naphthol. It can be made by either oxidizing 1-naphthalene sulfonic acid or by sulfonating naphthalene and then hydrolyzing it. 2-naphthol, often known as β-naphthol, is a significant hydroxynaphthalene.
