EDTA is used to soil to improve plant nutrient availability and as a micronutrient fertilizer in agriculture. It is used as a preservative in the food industry to keep processed goods from discoloring and from losing their quality. Moreover, EDTA is used in medicine as a chelation therapy to rid the body of harmful metals and in analytical chemistry for metal ion analysis. Because aminopolycarboxylic acids may sequester calcium and magnesium ions found in hard water, they are frequently used in detergent and cleaning agent formulations. This helps to improve the efficacy of cleaning solutions by reducing the production of insoluble soap scum. Because EDTA is persistent in the environment and has the ability to mobilize heavy metals in soil and water systems, the environmental impact of using APCAs, especially in this case, has sparked concerns.
