Leather tanning is the process of converting raw animal skins into usable leather. It consists of various phases, each of which is critical to the production of high-quality leather. To begin, the hides are cured to avoid deterioration. To remove excess moisture and restrict bacterial growth, they are preserved with salt. The hides are soaked in water after curing to rehydrate and eliminate the salt. The next process is to remove the hides' hair and flesh. This procedure, known as dehairing and fleshing, can be performed mechanically or chemically. Lime and other chemicals are used in traditional procedures to loosen hair and flesh, which is subsequently scraped off. The hides are then treated with tanning chemicals. Tanning is the critical stage in which the skin's collagen fibers are fixed to prevent deterioration and make the leather flexible. Vegetable tanning with plant extracts and chrome tanning using chromium salts are two tanning processes. Each process imparts unique properties to the leather. After tanning, the leather is further treated by coloring, fatliquoring, and conditioning. Dyeing adds color, whereas fatliquoring lubricates the fibers and increases their elasticity.
