The construction industry has relied heavily on cement as a fundamental building material for millennia. Portland cement, which was first produced in England's Isle of Portland in the 19th century, is one of the most popular varieties of cement. Because of its special qualities, such as its capacity to bind with different aggregates, cement is the main component of concrete, mortar, and grout. Most modern constructions, such as buildings, bridges, highways, and dams, are built on a foundation of concrete, which is composed of cement, sand, gravel, and water. These structures are stable and long-lasting thanks to cement's extraordinary capacity to hydrate, or harden and strengthen, when combined with water. Significant technological and environmental breakthroughs have been made in cement production over time.
